Cameroonian movie: On the Brim to spark waves

Skeptics must now be drifting from their initially cold impression about Cameroonian home video. It’s clear the best pages of the art are being written now. The country is growing richer and richer in its movie production. No day passes without an announcement of a new movie, either at pre-production, post-production or premiere stage. An observer who has been keen on this spectacular evolution ventured that Cameroon may soon be experiencing what Nigeria did for its film industry now ranked second only to Hollywood. To say he was right may not be overzealous. The scores of movies that are thrown into the market is a clear indication of this assertion.

One of the productions that will go into record as having contributed in writing this beautiful film history is On the Brim, an up-coming movie produced and directed by Waa Musi. Its release has just been announced and there is a seeming excitement and anxiety as Cameroonian film lovers await it. Reason – the proudly Cameroonian made movie stars some of today’s most selling actors including Kome Epule Jeffery aka Jazzy Jeff, Ruth Nkweti and Nkwah Kingsley. The trio has been fixers of some of the best-selling Cameroonian movies of late. On the Brim however seems to be one they would always be quick to mention. Nkweti had told TIPTOPSTARS it was a challenging production. “It’s a controversial topic, but I did it with the best of my ability,” she had told the online magazine’s editor.

This latest Cameroonian movie was shot few days after its director Waa Musi finished shooting (as D.O.P) Neba Lawrence’s Troubled Kingdom co-produced by South Africa-based Fred Kenyati and Mairo Sanda, living in Atlanta, USA. The movie’s poster made public a few days ago is fast pushing potential viewers’ appetite to uncontrollable levels. “Can’t wait,” Ankias Valley, renowned singer and lover of art simply wrote in a facebook reaction to On the Brim’s some days back.

Shot in Bamenda, regional headquarters of the North West in Cameroon, On the Brim is written by Yela Serge, a leading actor in Cameroon. It is edited by Waa Musi who himself cast the actors.

Perhaps what makes the story of this latest production more palatable is the fact that its producer/director is one of custodians of the traditions of the seven art in Cameroon. He is active in the copyright outfit that protects Cameroonian filmmaker’s intellectual property rights popularly known by its French acronym as SCAAP. But Waa Musi known more as the president of the 2008 created Cameroon Film Industry (CFI). Apart from other movies, the Bamenda-based filmmaker has produced documentaries, some of which have won prizes at international festivals.

On the Brim is coming at a time there is a positive remark on the risen quality of Cameroonian movies. The film will certainly be another reason to praise the fast-growing film industry more. TIPTOPSTARS intends to reach the On the Brim production crew for comments on their work. Watch out!
