just sam_American_IdolSunday, May 17, breaking Monday, May 18, was one of the rare vigils Liberians had in a long while now. The ones who have been fans of AMERICAN IDOL and the many who never bothered about this renowned song competition, stayed awake, this time, with an uncontrollable level of anxiety. Reason – one of the finalists of SEASON 8 had a Liberian connection. Samantha Diaz aka Just Sam’s grandmother is Liberian-American and this meant a lot for the West African country, in AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 18.

“I had only partially been interested in American Idol over the years, but this time, Just Sam’s participation had me glued to the competition,” said Kpakelah, a 22-year-old resident of Chocolate City, one of Monrovia’s northern suburbs.

“To me, Just Sam was bearing Liberia’s flag at the contest and I had no choice, than to trail it to its end,” he added.

Just like scores of other young Liberians at home and abroad, Kpakelah and his three bosom friends, Siakoh, Varkpeh and Leemu, organized a Skype come-together, minutes to the pronouncement of the winner of AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 18.

“We had been certain that our contestant would emerge victorious, so, we wanted to have the kind of feeling we usually have during a football encounter,” Varkpeh explained to told TIPTOPSTARS.

The four youths exploded with joy upon the pronouncement of Samantha Diaz aka Just Sam as winner of the coveted song competition. “I couldn’t hold back my tears, more so because my girl, Just Sam came to AMERICAN IDOL from day one, crying and each time she did, it sent me sobbing as well,” Leemu told us.

To Siakoh, the young singer is gifted. “However, it was her passionate stance and determination that saw her through,” he said. And added: “Just Sam ran the race as though it was the first and last thing she would do in her career.”

Abroad, Liberians have expressed similar excitement, following the AMERICAN IDOL victory of a contestant whose adoptee grandmother is the reason the West African country holds tight to her. “Just Sam’s victory is a message that Liberians can always make it to the top,” Sianey told TIPTOPSTARS. The Liberian, resident in Cadiff, Wales, explained that she had seen Just Sam coming and knew she would make it. “For that reason, I encouraged my kids to follow the competition as a way of encouraging them to work hard to fulfil their dreams - it’s a big lesson,” she said.

“I’m more indebted to the young singer’s grandma who makes me proud to be a Liberian,” Kempeh told us from Minnesota. She went further: “To have adopted and raised a child to the point of the latter, fulfilling her dreams, is worthy of praise and she deserves whatever she’s getting today.”

Crowned as the first ever ‘at home’ winner, Sam Just emerged above Dillon James, Jonny West, Arthur Gunn, Francisco Martin, contestants at the finale. Her grandmother, Elizabeth, born in Liberia, was watching the contest live from New York. She burst in tears upon the pronouncement of Just Sam’s name. She had adopted Samantha Diaz and brought her up in the Black Mecca of the world – Harlem neighborhood in New York City. Sam got attached to music at an early age and has always dreamt of reaching higher heights in the art.

“We hope she’ll visit Liberia, if she hasn’t yet, to see the great country from where her beloved grandma hails,” an excited Liberian mentioned.

“We’re proud as parents” Ayuk Tambi reacts to daughter’s (Little Cindy) music release
News / Latest / Ernest Kanjo
Monday, 04 May 2020 03:05
  • Mayohchu, 10, is an amazingly talented child actress who jacks in other areas of arts. While developing her movie acting career, she has always worked on building her music (singling) skills. The result unjouris a maiden single just released. The track, UN JOUR, is attracting enormous attention, especially from fans of the child artist who until now, only knew the movie side of Mayohchu. UN JOUR, sung in French and English, glorifies involved parenting and presents the young singer’s dad and mum as exemplary parents.

Produced by Blaise B’s Akwandor, the video of UN JOUR is directed by Rich Manga (acclaimed editor), renowned filmmaker, featuring Blaise B, Atem Ebai Jerome (dad), Ayuk Tambi (mum), Effim M’Ebob, Mary Asaba and Ndangoh Favour.

Upon release of the 4.11 minutes-long track, TIPTOPSTARS caught up with Ayuk Tambi, mother of the child singer who doubles as star in the renowned 2018 LITTLE CINDY (movie). Here are excerpts of the conversation she had with Ernest Kanjo:

TIPTOPSTARS (TTS): When was the idea of having Mayohchu sing nursed?

Ayuk Tambi (AT): Soon after she auditioned for “Little Cindy” the movie.

TTS: Tell us how you got Blaise B. to do this maiden project.

AT: We had put her first two songs on a hold, but at one point, we needed to work on something for her. I called Blaise B. and other artists whose names I would not disclose now, and they were all positive about giving Mayohchu a recording artist status. The artists agreed to compose for her. Blaise B got the pride of place for completing the task first. He got to us for a pre-recording session. Blaise had not been too well at that time, but he still sourced out time to work with us. We are eternally grateful to him for that.

TTS: Explain how Mayohchu’s first studio recording experience went.

AT: Curiously, “Un Jour” was not her first recording experience. Mayohchu had previously worked on a cover for Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl”. That was in November twenty nineteen. In January this year, she recorded two songs, “Show Ya Style” with Otang and Machia and “Faire Comment ca” with Otang. We held on with the tracks for reasons of not launching her career with a collabo. That said, “Un Jour” was done in two phases. The first was a pre-recording to get her vocal range and strength, then a week later, we had her do the final recording. Mayohchu enjoyed every bit of it though she still has a lot to learn.

TTS: How long did it take you to complete the project?

AT: Three months, that is, February to April twenty twenty.

TTS: What has been the reaction of her close friends and schoolmates so far?

Ans: The ones who are featuring in the video are particularly happy with the experience. Others are proud of Mayohchu. The initial idea for the video was a classroom scene to be shot in her school and other scenes where activities are ongoing. COVID-19 emerged to stand on the way of this plan. However, she is glad about the final product which thanks to Rich Manga and her parents, was quickly crafted as an alternative. I’d also like to appreciate the Proprietress of Gateway Bilingual Nursery and Primary School for her wonderful support towards the success of the project.

TTS: How does she feel after watching her own video?

AT: She feels proud of herself for this great result, achieved under difficult circumstances. She thinks she can do better, hahahaha!

TTS: What does this maiden music project mean to her parents?

AT: A lot to us as parents. It means our baby girl can make a difference in the world and her voice can be heard. Her opinion matters. It comes with responsibility. We are now tasked with making sure Mayohchu is groomed into becoming a positive and opinion leader for the youth in particular and for the world at large. We are happy parents.

TTS: Should the world be expecting more from her?

AT: Sure! More songs are on the way. Her year is lined up with songs, both audio and video and we will be releasing them progressively while hoping COVID-19 disappears.

TTS: Does she hope to tone down with movie acting, given that music would likely be easier to get through?

AT: Not at all! She is an entertainer and will continue entertaining people in all forms of arts she practises.

TTS: Where else will this track be available?

AT: Spotify, Apple music, Sound cloud, Google play, YouTube and Deezer.

TTS: Thanks for talking to TIPTOPSTARS!

AT: It’s my pleasure, Ernest!

Nigeria: Apex 1 Radio implanted in Calabar
News / Latest / TTS
Sunday, 17 February 2019 23:57

Selection 008
Clabar has been an Apex 1 Radio State in Nigeria, since the creation of the station in 2015. This is largely thanks to the General Manager, Gracee Boycee, who hails from there. Recently, the station has been officially planted in Calabar with the putting in place of a young team. This team, run by Blessing Lovette (bilingual broadcaster - speaks English and French), will lead the aspirations of the scores of Apex 1 Radio listeners in the State, ensuring that Calabar is adequately covered.

Apex 1 Radio Calabar is turning into a reality after a working visit of the General Manager to Calabar, which lasted for six weeks. During this time, Gracee Boycee communed with fans of the station and other stakeholders. A televised show was recorded in the process. Guests on it expressed their excitement meeting the GM and confessed their undiluted love for Apex 1 Radio.

Before now, Calabar was attached to Apex 1 Radio via "Life Happens", a weekly show that touches every aspect of life, run by Boycee herself. For the time the Sunday show has lasted, a reasonable number of Calabar fans have been amazingly active on it. "It's our show, we love and will promote it to the fullest," one of them had told Apex 1 Radio.

It should be noted that the presence of Apex 1 Radio in Nigeria stepped up from early 2018, when "Afro-Ethics", run by Ayo Akinuli, another son of the soil began. Thanks to the weekly show that presents Africa in all its facets, top-rated Nigeria entertainers and politicians have been interviewed on Apex 1 Radio.
