Tabala Dance is a contemporary piece of music which from its title, relates to the enviable past, especially to Cameroonians of the older generation who lived in the country’s west of the Mungo divide. It regurgitates a childhood dance expression which was also played as a game. It involved the swift swinging of legs and dexterous clapping of hands as the performers hummed in the process. The electronic has since swept tabala and many more such values under the carpet, but creative artists have vowed to go back and resurrect them.

The release of Tabala Dance had provoked a quasi uncontrollable quest for its video, a project Praudo DJ, the track’s author took immediately embarked on. The official outing of the video a couple of days ago has added impetus to the Tabala Dance. It has just taken me years back and see myself doing tabala again – wow!,” Cecilia, a Cameroonian living in Arizona, USA told TIPTOPSTARS. “This has evoked nostalgia – I miss those good old days – kudos to Praudo DJ,” Emerencia told us. The Maryland, USA-based Cameroonian who lived the great moments of tabala said she couldn’t help throwing up tears in an emotional display of her attachment to tabala.I used to play tabala late into the night, under the moonlit,” she explained.

Directed by Drama Star, Tabala Dance, the makers have told TIPTOPSTARS, will be aired on some frontline TV channels including CRTV, Canal 2 International, Boom TV, etc. “We also expect to have it playing on some TV channels out of the country,” a press release to that effect indicated.

Meanwhile, Praudo DJ aka The Bamenda Boy, author of Tabala Dance, returned to Cameroon in 2013, after spending six years in Nigeria during which time he amassed a lot of music experience. Upon his return, Praudo DJ released Cheh Cheh Cameroon which fetched him the prestigious Best Cameroonian Cultural Artist of the Year award in 2013. This was followed by I Go Marry You featuring Charly B Chuye.

While in Nigeria, Praudo DJ played with several bands including The White Doves of Nigeria. He has been on some of Cameroon’s most valued TV shows to promote his works including Monday Show and Vandredi Show and Hello on and Jambo Tele on Canal 2 International.

Calendar enters Zigoto’s film calendar
News / Latest / ??Ernest Kanjo??
••Sunday•, 05 •June• 2016 21:36•

IMG-20160524-WA0002Zigoto is back! The ingenious Cameroonian filmmaker, whose ability to invent a new approach in cinematographically telling each of his stories has been great admired, has reappeared, after a break. His latest feature length fiction film, Calendar, is the biggest anxiety within film circles in Cameroon, as we write.

When it comes from Zigoto, I can press my fingers on the table to conjecture that it will be an impeccable production,” Praxedis, a Yaounde-based Cameroonian movie lover told TIPTOPSTARS soon after the wallpaper of the film went public. “I have watched all Zigoto’s films and each of them have impacted me differently and I’m convinced Calendar will be another masterpiece,” she went on.

According to the Yaounde-based filmmaker who doubles as film educator at the University of Yaounde I, Calendar, written by Nancy Kienyo seeks to celebrate differences in cultural values that give room for understanding and tolerance. It tells the story of Golda, an American woman, who goes through a three-week matrimonial drilling calendar in order to meet the approval of her Cameroonian husband’s family. Golda’s strength is highlighted in every context.

This high-action drama is a blend of Cameroonian, American, French and German actors who have decided to support the growing Cameroonian film industry,” the production team of Calendar writes in a press release sent to TIPTOPSTARS.

Featuring amongst others in the film, produced by Aime Dinayen Selamo, are Maryam Abdi, Leleity Keuzeubou, Esther Tsefoin, Ruth Akwi, Evi Jones, Cordella Ngonde, Bernard Wirsiy and Nelian Bame.

Shot on locations in Kribi, Ngambe Tikar, Yaounde and Bamenda, Calendar, directed by Zigoto Tchaya Tchameni, sees the light of day officially on July 31, 2016 during a red carpet premiere billed for Djeuga Palace in Yaounde.

Daphne reveals comic side in latest video
News / Latest / ??Ernest Kanjo??
••Saturday•, 16 •April• 2016 01:03•
tiptopstars daphne

Stunning! That’s how a Daphne fan described Mother’s Love, the artist’s previous track that sent young girls regurgitating their filial love for their mums. More than stunning! The same fan came back, this time giving Daphne’s latest single, a bigger qualifier. Allez, the said track that arrived in the music market on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 like a shooting star, has already permeated Cameroonian circles abroad with immeasurable vigor. This is a clear indication that the author of Rastafari and Ndolo has kept to her tradition – crafting only the kind of songs that possess the capacity to move their consumers.

If we go by the rhythm, words and dance flare in Allez, then the fervent Daphne fan who sees Allez beyond just being a stunning track is unarguably on point. But let’s stay with the third aspect – the dance. Allez by every ramification, spots on a front seat position when it comes to comic dancing in videos released in Cameroon of late.

In a rare occasion, the singer, known for her glaring seriousness while in activity, is noticed in an exciting comic mood as she displays the ‘Bend Skin a la Daphne et Les Featurists’. This is certainly resulting from a video set inspiration from the starring clown duo whose ingenuous approach in dramatizing the story in Allez, gives the video the grandeur it is now feasting on.

Described by its makers as fun and playful, Daphne’s Allez, produced by Mr. Winney and AnyKindBeats, is dance-in, dance-out, with the potential of mobilizing much more attention than could be remotely imagined. The song/ video features Les Featurists, a Cameroonian band that has been in the headlines for quite some time now. It was a lot of fun working with Les Featurists, both in the studio and on the video set,” Daphne said. She added: “I hope our fans will have as much fun, listening, watching and dancing to the Allez just as much as we did while making it.” To Steven’s Music Entertainment (SME), Les Featurists’ role in the project was a great asset. “They add a balanced touch to the story of the song,” the production outfit wrote in a release sent to TIPTOPSTARS.

Allez is directed by Dr. Nkeng Stephens who has done previous Daphne jobs, including Mother’s Love, Gunshot and Rastafari.

Meantime, Daphne is currently nominated for the 2016 edition of the prestigious KORA Awards.

Shiri Achu Arts set to paint Washington
News / Latest / ??Ernest Kanjo??
••Saturday•, 16 •April• 2016 00:44•

tts achuWashington DC, the world’s strongest political capital, is a very beautiful city. DC, as it is affectionately known will be more beautiful as from May 15, 2016. This will be soon after Shiri Achu would have run her fine art brush across this great city, painting the beauty of life as she knows best.

For the first time, the venerated painter whose artistic attitude of rubbing cities with the brightest colors they deserve is focusing on Washington DC. That the painter is ready and will transform the minds and perceptions of DC dwellers towards paintings is no doubt. “I’m really excited and looking forward to this debut in Washington,” says Shiri.

In what has been dubbed 36InPrint, the May 5-14, 2016 art exhibition will give room for visitors to view, touch, appreciate and purchase one or more of what the artist describes as 36 framed signed limited edition Shiri Achu Art Prints. “They’ll be gotten at very affordable prices,” she told TIPTOPSTARS.

According to the programme, 36InPrint will begin with private viewing on Thursday May 5, during which a raffle will produce three lucky winners of signed limited edition framed prints worth $400 each, as well as a copy of Naomi Achu’s (USA-based Cameroonian rapper and sister of Shiri Achu) new album. The exhibition’s public opening party takes place on Friday May 6, 2016 at the Gallery a – 2106 R. Street, N.W Washington DC, 20008.

Before 36InPrint, the painter, under the watchful eyes of the Mayor of Harrow, registered a resounding success at the 35InPrint exhibition that took place in London April 19 – 25, 2014 at the Strand Gallery.

Shiri Achu’s art paintings have attracted enormous attention over the years. According to the painter who just relocated to the US from the UK, her inspiration is broad - from her travels, to natural moments captured in Africa and still objects, from the human form to the human in action. “I capture the spirit of my subjects and make them come alive through form, colour, texture and tone,” she says.

The USA-based Cameroonian painter insists that her works are aimed at showcasing African cultures wherever she and the paintings go. She finds beauty in the woman carrying her child on her back and going her way, just like the typical Ngemba (ethnic group in the North West region of Cameroon) woman, making achu (a traditional delicacy) in her dark outdoor kitchen for her grandchildren. Shiri admires the beauty in the African fabrics, just like the young girl climbing a tree. She cannot let these great moments pass by without interpreting them with the use of her brush. That’s the meaning of arts to the artist. And that’s what has kept her waxing and maintained her works veritable masterpieces.

••Monday•, 04 •April• 2016 00:19•
