Professional dancing is not common in Cameroon, West of the Mungo. Yet few young people in this region have not only given it a try, but are making great strides in the art. One of them is Lami Lum Nicoline, now in the United States of America. The 25-year-old talented dancer is fast becoming popular in ballroom dancing, a display she has been involved in for the past two years. “I was inspired by Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez and have always nursed ambitions to be like them,” she says. She continues, “Also dancing has always been my passion.” The 1.67m- tall dancer’s passion for the art has driven her to work extremely hard, learning 19 different types of dances in the process, including: Bottle dance, Bikutsi, Salsa, Rock and Roll, African Rhumbah, Jive, Samba, Cha Cha, Passo Doble, Tango Quick Step and Show Fox. “I sacrifice a lot of time to be able to master these dances,” the 58kg dancer from Bafut in the North West Province explains.
But what makes Lami tick in
the art she knows best? “The ability to get drowned in the exercise during a
performance,” says the cute and agile dancer. Born in Nigeria, Lami is a talented actress and has featured in several Cameroonian films.
